Long-time Club members may remember the "Raiders of the Lost Greenway" rides that were held from 1997 to 2003, when we circumnavigated the Upper Manhattan waterfront on paths that were once public parks but had been neglected or even abandoned by the city. Most of those paths were reopened in 2003 by the Bloomberg administration's "Termporary Manhattan Waterfront Greenway" project, and some of them have since been drastically improved by reconstruction projects.

But there are still some big holes in the upper Manhattan waterfront paths, and the biggest one of all is coming up soon - the West Side Greenway between Dyckman Street and the George Washington Bridge, which is slowly collapsing into the hillside, will be closed for two years for repairs, with no detour planned. Worse yet, sections that were rebuilt in 2003 are now collapsing into the river. But there's some good news, a section that was off-limits for years, formerly graced by polka-dotted concrete trucks but now an empty expanse, is (sort of) bikeable again.

So let's go riding on the Upper Manhattan waterfront and see what we find! The route will be bumpy and occasionally unpaved, so we recommend hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, or a road bike that doesn't mind occasional bouts of unfriendly terrain (like one with 28c (1 1/4") tires or wider).

Ride meets at East River Esplanade Park, at East 37th Street and the East River. BRING LUNCH, we are not going inside except for bathroom stops. Ride endpoint will be further uptown, stay tuned for details. You should also bring snacks, water, a spare tube, and an extra layer in case the weather is colder than expected.
