On the Trail of the Lenapes: Freehold

Deep in the Heart of Central NJ

9:00am

35 miles / Moderate / Starting at Penn Station

The first in a series of early spring Get Out of Towners. We'll be doing an easy 35-miler (more or less) from Princeton Junction to Aberdeen-Matawan, via Freehold, the favored crossroads of the long-gone Lenapes and the site where revolutionary hero Molly Pitcher she-manned a cannon after her husband was gunned down at nearby Monmouth Battlefield. Much of the ride from Freehold to Matawan is on the Henry Hudson Rail Trail, so we'll see lots of greenery and carless countryside. From Princeton Junction into Freehold, it's mostly flat, with some minor climbs, but for the most... more

Lemon Louis

9:30am

30 miles / Happy Face / Start Location TBD

Queens Trumps the other boroughs, especially via a "Trumpeteer" who blew the horn that made him famous.  Add a little gravel to your "Hello Dolly" voice and you have one of the greatest American entertainers of all time, Louis Armstrong. Our ride first takes us to Flushing Cemetery where we will pay our respects at his grave.   Then, we will head to an ethnic restaurant, to dine on some of the food that Louis loved most. Lunch, dessert and then we cycle to Louis's house/museum in Corona. After learning about this American icon and his optimistic look,  we are sure you too will think to... more

Spring Training - Centre island

9:30am

60 miles / Advanced Moderate / Starting at Cunningham Park

One of our favorite rides and destinations, Centre Island is a special enclave on Long Island’s North Shore. This scenic ride increases the miles, but that won't be an issue if you have joined some prior rides. Check out the beautiful North Shore and build up some endurance at the same time.  Bring a light lock, two water bottles of your choice of hydration or equivalent, a pre-lunch snack (lunch at mile 38), lunch or money for lunch, a string bag to carry your lunch a short distance, and an upbeat inquisitive attitude. Weather-permitting, we’ll eat lunch outdoors at West Harbor Beach... more

10:15am

50-55 miles / Advanced Moderate / Start Location TBD

A new ride series.  We will be offering a series of rides on the east end of Long Island, exploring the beauty of the North and South Forks, and of course Shelter Island.  Some of these rides have been offered previously; some are brand new.

This is a scenic ride that is not to be missed that will tour some known and some hidden gems around the southfork - mostly in East Hampton Township.  We did this ride as a Club ride for the first time last September and it was a huge hit.  There are some pretty amazing areas and great water views.  We are putting together an east end series of... more

7:00am

35-40 miles / Moderate / Starting at Grand Central Terminal

Ah, Memorial Day Weekend is finally here and what better way to celebrate than to hit the back roads of coastal Connecticut. Our destination: Thimble Islands, one of the majestic wonders of the world, and only a heartbeat away from New Haven, where beforehand we'll breakfast at Clare's Cornercopia, a venerable culinary landmark in its own right feeding generations of hungry Yale undergraduates.  (Those on a leaner diet can simply carb up at the nearby Dunkin' Donuts.) Some of the sights along the way include: the West Haven Lighthouse, a Victorian carousel, a defunct trolley rail trail... more

Sandy Hook 21th Anniversary Ride

8:00am

25 miles / Moderate / Starting at Pier 11

I have led this 5BBC ride since 1998, inspired after recovering from a broken thumb on the then-5BBC Montauk Century. Sandy Hook was a former military installation, now a National Recreation Area, a Federal Park on the north tip of the famed Jersey Shore. We’ll leave on the 8:15AM Pier 11 Seastreak ferry. It will be worth your while. Once on the Hook, the starting miles will be on a nice bike path. We’ll go beyond the park to the town of Sea Bright, then through nice parts of Middletown, climbing to Mt. Mitchill Lookout. We will descend to the town of Atlantic Highlands. From... more

Staten Island Perimeter, 22nd Anniversary Edition

9:15am

40 Miles plus miles / Moderate / Starting at South Ferry

Way back when in 1996, a young Alfredo Garcia planned this ride using paper Hagstrom Maps, with trial and error scouting.  He has been doing this ride for the 5BBC ever since 1997.  This year, Alfredo will be joined by Mel, another fan of the Forgotten Boro.  As the title says, we will be going around the outside of the scenic Isle of Staten.  In doing this ride, we travel on some lovely bike paths, and some not so lovely local roads.  Much of the ride is flat, but being Staten Island, you know there will also be a nice sprinkling of hills.  Our last hill climbs up to Ft. Wadsworth for one... more
