Bash Bish Preview Ride
Please note: due to shuttle bus at Southeast Station, the route has changed and is subsequently longer. We are still meeting at the same time and taking the same train, but then we will ride from Southeast Station to Millerton and Rudd Pond. (Sorry that we won't be able to use the swimming hole at Bash Bish, but we will swim in Rudd Pond.)
The new distance is: 93 miles and 4667' of elevation. (We may drop 4 miles and some elevation by taking the same route there and back, if necessary.) New ridewithgps route is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/23386761
Original description is here: On Saturday, July 22, 2017, we will meet at Grand Central Terminal at 7:30 am and take Metro North Railroad (train 9611/9911: 7:50 departure) to Wingdale. We then ride our bikes towards Bash Bish Falls State Park, a distance of approximately 42 miles on low-traffic, scenic country roads. There will be optional activities including a short hike to Bash Bish Falls, a bicycle ride up a steep mountain road to a spectacular vantage point, and a refreshing swim in a pond formed from an abandoned iron ore mine. After Bash Bish, we will bike approximately 30 miles back to Wassaic. We expect to stop for lunch at midday, but we will only have time to grab snacks or sandwiches for dinner before we take the train back to GCT.
(The original plan and ridewithgps file has been kept in place on this page because we may be allowed on the shuttle bus.) Total elevation is 3692'. If necessary, a return route with less elevation may be taken back to Wassaic train station. Here is the original ridewithgps file: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/23063494
Road or touring bikes are recommended. We recommend you don't carry extra weight on your bike so you'll be more comfortable doing the 72 miles we plan to ride. Please do the two-minute bike check before you arrive at GCT so you'll know your bike is ready for an excellent day of riding!
(If you would prefer to get on Metro North at 125th St. or Fordham Rd., please call or email firstname.lastname@example.org in advance.)
What this will cost: This inexpensive ride is priced a la carte. Your expenses will include round-trip train fare (about $39) beverages, and food.
You MUST wear a helmet; gloves are also strongly recommended. Bring: a smile & the desire to see beautiful countryside, MTA bike permit ($5, lifetime pass does not expire,) two spare inner tubes, patch kit, pump for your tires, sunglasses, bug spray, sunblock, headlight & rear light, plenty of fluids & energy snacks. Optional: rain jacket/pants, swimsuit or quick-dry bike clothes for the swimming hole.
Please note: there are no bike shops nearby. Please bring what you need to repair your bike. Bring an extra power stick for your phone.
In case of bad weather, the ride may be postponed to 7/23/2017. If you aren't sure about the weather, please call or text Doug: 917-501-3095. (I don't check email on ride days.)
