Jim Langley also wrote what may be the best online source for basic bike repair and maintenance. Best of all, it's free.
Anyone interested in bike repairs should also take a look at Sheldon Brown's articles.
Learn how to fix your bicycle. Cyclists volunteer to work at Recycle a Bicycle on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Recycle a Bicycle DUMBO location. It is always a lot of fun, and you can learn how to true wheels, rebuild a headset, rebuild a bottom bracket, and other bicycle rebuilding tasks. You don't have to bring anything with you. They provide the bicycles to work on and all of the tools. Chris has taught many students how to rebuild bicycles, and now they can teach you. You may find that after a few weeks of working at Recycle a Bicycle, you are teaching others how to repair bicycles! They are located just under the Manhattan bridge, & close to public transportation & there is free parking right outside! They are occasionally closed for holidays, so just call 718-858-2972 to make sure that they are open.
