5BBC Montauk Century 2010

Details: The FAQ Page

Q: I did not get my registration materials and merchandise. Where do I get them?

A: If you registered online and did not receive your Bike & Baggage tags, please present printed proof of ride registration at check-in. For ordered merchandise (Jerseys and T-Shirts), you may pick them up at the finish line, and bring printed proof of purchase.

Q: I didn’t buy a (return ticket / jersey / t-shirt). Can I buy one now?

A: You may purchase return transportation from Montauk at check-in for $25, cash-only. If you're interested in purchasing a t-shirt or jersey, we will be selling a limited stock of remaining items at the finish line, cash only.

Q: When does online registration close?

A: Online registration has closed. Day-of registration will be available, cash-only, at $110 (plus $25 for optional return transportation).

Q: How do the different rides work?

All Rides – All rides end at Montauk but start at different locations along the route between Penn Station and Montauk.

When you check in you’ll bring one small bag with you. The bag contains the things you’ll need after the ride, such as a change of clothes and a towel for the shower you’ll take when you get to the finish line. You’ll put your bag on a truck which will go directly to Montauk. Before you put your bag on the truck, don’t forget to remove things that you may need during your ride, such as medications, glasses or a jacket.

65-Mile Ride - You’ll check in at either Penn Station or at the Babylon LIRR station. You’ll put your bike on a truck that will go to the Mastic-Shirley LIRR station. Then you’ll get on the train to Mastic-Shirley where you’ll pick up your bike and start your 65 mile ride.

If you’re a little nervous about riding alone, then you can join the relaxed pace group that’s escorted by experienced 5BBC ride leaders. Just look for the “GROUP RIDE” sign at the Mastic-Shirley LIRR station.

Please keep in mind that there are no check-in facilities at Mastic-Shirley and there is no return transportation back to that location.

100-Mile Ride - You’ll check in at either Penn Station or at the Babylon LIRR station. If you check in at Penn Station, you’ll put your bike on a truck that will go to Babylon. You’ll then get on the train to Babylon, where you’ll pick up your bike and start your 100 mile ride.

If you check in at Babylon, you’ll start riding your 100 mile ride as soon as you finished checking in.

145-Mile Ride – You must check in at Penn Station because that’s where the 145-mile ride begins. As soon as you check in you can start your 145 mile ride. You will start your ride before sunrise so make sure you have front and rear lights on your bike.

Q: Exactly where are the check-in locations?

Penn Station is on the northeast corner of West 31st Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan. You can get there by subway lines A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, and the N, R, B, D, F, Q lines two blocks away at Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) at West 32nd Street.

The Babylon LIRR Station is located on Railroad Avenue, just west of Deer Park Avenue, one mile south of Sunrise Highway (Route NY-27).

Q: Exactly where is the finish line?

A:The finish line is at the Old Harbor House, 240 Fort Pond Road, Montauk. It's across the street from the Montauk LIRR station

Q: What time should I check in?

That depends on the tour you’re riding and where you check in:

Penn Station Check-In Begins At:
Babylon Check-In Begins At:
65-Mile Ride
6:00 AM
7:00 AM
100-Mile Ride
3:45 AM*
6:00 AM
145-Mile Ride
5:00 AM
N/A
* That’s not a typo. We all have to work around the LIRR train schedule and the train to Babylon leaves very early. We suggest you arrive early to beat the crowd.

Q: How do I get back from Montauk?

You have three choices:

1) you can have someone pick you up,

2) you can stay overnight at a motel and return the next day or,

3) you can buy return transportation from us.

If you buy return transportation from us, you will get a LIRR ticket back to Penn Station or Babylon and we will carry your bike back by truck.

Q: Can I bring my bike on the LIRR?

No. On the day of the Montauk Century the LIRR will not permit bikes on any trains. That's their rule, not ours, and that’s why we have to make arrangements so we can offer return transportation for you and your bike.

Q: I registered to (check in at __________) (do a ___-mile tour). Can I change my mind?

A: Yes, just show up at Penn Station or Babylon as you prefer and ride the tour you want to ride. The only reason we ask for that info is to get total numbers for the LIRR and for the number of trucks that we’ll need.

Q: I bought a return ticket to (Penn Station / Babylon). Can I return to the other station?

A: Yes, but the Bike & Baggage Tags are color coded to indicate the return destination, so you should exchange your tags for the right color at the check-in table on the day of the tour.

Q: What’s the parking situation at Penn Station?

A: Your best bet is one of the 24-hour park and pay garages in the area. If you’re lucky you might find one of the few spots on the street where unmetered Sunday parking is allowed.

Q: What’s the parking situation at Babylon?

A: There’s plenty of parking in the LIRR station parking lot but its metered parking. It will cost you about $5 in quarters. There are change machines at the station but sometimes they run out of quarters, so bring your own. There’s also a free parking lot about a half-mile west of the LIRR station.

Q: What’s the parking situation at the finish line?

A: The finish line is adjacent to the LIRR train station parking lot. You can park there for free.

Q: Can my kid brother ride with me?

Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have a signed release by their parent or guardian.

Q: What if it rains?

The Montauk Century rolls on Sunday May 16, 2010, rain or shine. We're not intimidated by a few raindrops and we hope that you won't be either.

Q: Can I get a refund if I register and then change my mind?

Sorry, but we have to say no refunds, no exceptions. We purchase support services and supplies well in advance of the tour, based on how many riders are signing up. The system can't work if people cancel registrations.

However, you can sell your spot to another rider. You are welcome to use the Montauk Century bulletin board as one way to do it. Once you sell your spot, give your registration materials to the new rider, then have him/her check in on ride day and sign the waiver.

Q: How do I sign up?

Online registration has closed. Day-of registration will be available, cash-only, at $110 (plus $25 for optional return transportation).

Best regards and may the wind be at our backs on May 16th,
