VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

It takes only 20 bucks to be a 5BBC member. It takes hard work to be a 5BBC volunteer. Which one are you? It takes a lot of volunteers to make the Montauk Century the best event of its kind. Are you one of them? If you are, keep reading.

What you will get
For starters, you'll get a 2011 Montauk Century volunteer t-shirt. You'll also be invited to the Montauk Century volunteer party where you'll meet the other movers and shakers who make the 5BBC the friendliest bike club in the city.

Maybe you'll even get to ride the tour. Some of our volunteers help out because they want to donate their time to a non-profit organization that's dedicated to bicycling advocacy. Others help out because they're attracted by the complementary ride that we offer. Either way is fine with us.

What Can You Do?
You can do lots of things. See below for job descriptions. Some jobs require that you must be capable of riding a B-Pace or better after finishing your job so that you can reach the finish line in time to catch the train back home. A "B-Pace" is at least 13 mph. Jobs like that are flagged with the note "B-PACE OR BETTER REQUIRED".

All volunteers who do ride on event day are expected to do so as riding marshals after they finish their volunteer assignment. As a riding marshal you will wear your volunteer t-shirt, carry a patch kit, pump and tire levers, and help less experienced riders who are having trouble fixing their flats. For more serious problems you can call for SAG support.

Penn Station, 1st Shift: 2:45AM to 5:00AM
For volunteers who want to ride the 100-mile route. Volunteers will set up the check-in station, load bikes and baggage onto trucks and check in riders. After completing their shift, volunteers will catch the train to the 100-mile start line at Babylon. Upon reaching Babylon, volunteers will then unload the arriving trucks before riding.

Upon reaching Mastic-Shirley, volunteers will then unload the arriving trucks before riding.

Are You Ready to Volunteer?
If you are, then send an email to the 5BBC's volunteer coordinator and tell us:
1. Your name, email address and phone number (cell phone preferred)
2. Which job you're interested in.
3. Whether or not you want to ride the route.

We'll get back to you and let you know if we still have an opening for the job you want. If we do, we'll then ask you to register online as a volunteer to confirm your commitment.

Upon completion of your assignment, you will receive your bike and baggage (B&B) tags from your crew chief. Your B&B tags are your ticket to ride the tour.
