General Meeting - Monday Evening
January 11, 2010 at 6:30 PM

Merle Myerson, MD, EdD, FACC

The holiday season is over and hopefully no one has over indulged in food or drink? What better time than the off season, I know the riding season is never over, than to assess one's fitness and to get ready for the warmer weather. With this in mind we are pleased that our first speaker of the new year will be Merle Myerson, M.D. Ed.D, F.A.C.C. Dr Myerson is The Director of the Pre-Sports Participation Heart Screening Program as well as the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program at St Lukes and Roosevelt Hospitals. She has also worked with many clubs such as ours - Please see the following web site for more background info: www.wehealny.org/services/slr_cardioprevention/staff.html.

Dr.Myerson will speak about exercise and the heart, risk factors for stroke and heart attack and what may cause sudden death during exercise and athletic competition. She is an avid runner and cyclist and has competed in cycling road races, time trials and criteriums in the late 1980's.

Please join us for healthy refreshments at The American Youth Hostel Building - 891 Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan at 103rd Street in The Board Room, for this most informative presentation. We will also be hearing from some of the 5BBC's coordinators as to what is being planned for The 2010 Season!

Regards!

Winter Clearance Sale at Bicycle Habitat
Monday Evening February 08, 2010 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Charlie McCorkell bicyclehabitat.com and his associates will once again for the fourth year host us!
This is an Exclusive 5BBC happening for members and their invited guests. Store inventory merchandize will be on Sale in excess of the ordinary 5BBC Club Discount for that evening . You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the best crew of Bike Techs in the city. After Hours is obviously a great to time to speak with Habitats Staff in a relaxed, social and informational setting.

Charlie is a fixture of the NYC Bicycle community and has been a great supporter of the Club including our Montauk Century.
"Rumor" has it that he has taken over additional space a few store fronts down that will be ready in Early 2010. While he is still "working" the theme, I understand that part of his vision will focus on Commuter Bicycling, as always Charlie is a head of the "curve" on this one. Bike Commuting is increasing in NYC!

Bicycle Habitat is Located at 244 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10012 - a few blocks south of Houston Street,
the nearest subway is the #6 to Spring or Bleecker Street. Phone (212) 431-3315

March Members Program: Kripalu Yoga Class
Friday evening March 26, 2010 at 6:15 PM to 8:00 PM

A Gentle Approach To Yoga
How This Practice Can Benefit Your Cycling Skills!!!

The Practice

5BBC is pleased to work with the New York Center for Kripalu Yoga & Health www.nykripalu.org to present the March members program. The evening will feature certified Kripalu Yoga teacher Timothy Lamb leading a yoga class geared toward cyclists, incorporating stretching and meditation to improve flexibility and focus.  Kripalu Yoga encourages self-compassion, a flowing breath, and being present in the body as you choose your level of physical intensity.  The key concepts are: Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch, & Allow.  Both beginners & experienced students are welcome to an evening of movement and inspiration.

Lee Vibhusha Ilan and Timothy Lamb

Timothy Lamb has been studying and practicing yoga daily since 2004 and became a Kripalu yoga instructor in the summer of 2009. His classes have a strong emphasis on finding an evenness of breath, body, and mind while incorporating Anusara inspired alignment principles taught by his teacher Paulo Hudson. His class offers clear instruction in pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation (breath awareness), asana (physical posture), and guided relaxation; not necessarily in that order.

Lee Vibhusha Ilan is a veteran 5BBC Member and has been practicing Kripalu Yoga for many years. Since 1994 she has served as the volunteer director of New York Kripalu, the local community that practices & teaches Kripalu Yoga & the teachings of Swami Kripalu.

The class will take place at the Breathing Project, 15 West 26th Street, 10th floor, New York, NY 10011 - between 6th Ave and Broadway.  Nearest subways are W/R, 1, or 6 to 28th or 23rd Street, or F/V to 23rd. Please note that this is a departure from the regular Friday Evening class Location. Wear or bring loose comfortable clothing - changing areas and mats are available.  Please arrive on time - building doors are locked at 7pm. Cost for the program is $15. Space is limited (as the organization is a volunteer community this helps defray costs) - to reserve your spot, leave a message at 212-591-1213 or e-mail : programs@5bbc.org. Bikes are not permitted in the building. We hope to see you at the program! Optional dinner afterward at a vegetarian Indian restaurant in nearby Curry Hill (Approximate Cost $12 - 15) and share in a communal meal! Peace!

A Book Signing for "Lost Cyclist" at Bicycle Habitat

On Monday, September 27th, we have the rare privilege of an evening with David V. Herlihy, bicycling historian and writer best-known for his award-winning “Bicycle: The History.”

David will be the 5BBC’s special guest for a reading and book signing at Bicycle Habitat of his newest work, "Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance." This is the thoroughly-researched story of Frank Lenz, a young wheelman who departed New York City in 1892 to travel around the globe. He never made it. Instead, Lenz was lost cycling to where he was told not to go: eastern Turkey, in the midst of a Turkish and Kurdish campaign that would kill some 10,000 Armenian civilians. The New York Times calls Herlihy’s book “grippingly detailed” and “a view from the helmet cam in the days before helmet cams.”

The program begins at 7:00 PM. We’ll be serving snacks and light fare. As an extra bonus, our good friend, Habitat owner Charlie McCorkell, is providing one of the store’s legendary discounts on inventory in stock, both for 5BBC members and their friends. Bicycle Habitat’s staff will also happily show us their newly expanded space. Bicycle Habitat is located at 244 Lafayette Street (between Houston & Spring Streets), Manhattan; (212) 431-3315.

In addition to “The Lost Cyclist” and “Bicycle: The History,” David V. Herlihy and his work has been featured on National Public Radio and Voice of America and in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Boston, and Historic Preservation. In 1999, Herlihy received the McNair History Award from the Wheelmen, the preeminent American association of antique bicycle collectors.

October-General Meeting:
Monday Evening-October 18,2010-Starts at 6:00 PM

The Tappan Zee Bridge and I-287 Corridor
The Next Cycling Paradise!

Advisory Teams' Field Trip to The George Washington Bridge This Past Winter

Google Maps Photo: Tappan Zee Bridge

Back Ground: When The Tappan Zee Bridge (TZB) opened in 1955 it carried 18,000 vehicles a day. Today it’s between 140,000 to 170,000. The estimate by 2015 is 200,000. The bridge was build for a 50 year life span. Attempts at repair, movable lanes and congestion pricing have proved to only be marginal to control the flow of traffic. The current bridge is also not seismic resistant. A major overhaul would be cost prohibitive.

At an open house on June 28,2010, at The Westchester Marriott, The TZB project Design Team presented four final designs. We are pleased to announce that all of the designs have incorporated a mixed use model to include bicycles, pedestrians and express bus routes. Rail is included in all four designs (but is depended on funding). The next phase is to ensure a safe, environmental and fun venue along the corridor that is from Port Chester in Westchester to Suffern in Rockland. Fantastic for you Bear Mountain Adventurers! Please see for more details: www.tzbsite.com

Many of you know Steve Faust, a long standing 5BBC Leader. Steve for the past year has been representing the club as a member of the advisory committee to the TZB Project Management Team. About Steve Faust: Steve has been involved with cycling for close to 50 years including participation with the clubs predecessor organizations. He is a professional Transportation Planner and is retired from The Federal Transit Administration (FTA). He is a Graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He is a graduate of Brooklyn College and has taken civil engineering courses at Cooper Union.
