A message from your 2009 Program Coordinator Barry Hartglass
It is good to be back as the Program Coordinator after a hiatus in 2008. I am in the process of formulating the 2009 General Meetings. The January and February Meetings will be held at The American Youth Hostel Building located at 891 Amsterdam Avenue, NY 10025 ( 103rd Street ). The meetings are held in Board Room #111 and commencing at 6:30 PM. Light and healthy refreshments will be served! The closest subway is the # 1 at 103rd & Broadway. I will be scouting out additional interesting venues for later on in the season!

Monday Evening February 09, 2009-An Evening Discussion on Volunteerism & The Inside scoop on early season 5BBC Week End Trips!
October of 2008, Our Steve Sakson and several other 5BBC members ventured down to New Orleans under the auspices of Habitat For Humanity to help build a house. Steve & others will share their stories and experiences. Click here for more www.habitat.org/how/factsheet.aspx

Six members of the 5BBC volunteered to work with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. They were part of a group of 13 New Yorkers who spent a week building a home in St. Bernard Parish, an area close to where flood waters went as high as 20 feet. Steve Sakson, who led the group, was joined by club members Debbie Friedman, Randy Horowitz, Peter Morales, Mary O'Neill, and Jim Wall.

John Campo a "fixture" at the Kissena Velo Drome will be introducing himself and his volunteer efforts at the Velo Drome in the trainning of Junior Amateur racing cyclists from the NYC Public School System. http://www.kissena.info/track/more.php?id=57_0_8_0_M
You will be invited during the meeting to share any personal experiences and it is hoped that this program will spur interest, in the 5BBC, for developing a community service project during the season.
Rounding out the evening the 5BBC Week End Trips Coordinator, Fred Dieckamp and some week end trip leaders, will be present to entice the audience with respect to early season weekend trips. Fred in Particular is interested in resurrecting an old 5BBC Favorite, The Cherry Blossoms Festival in Washington DC (March 27 to March 29) http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/cms/index.php?id=390 . April General Meeting - An Enlighten Ride!

Location: Jivamukti Yoga School, 841 Broadway,New York,NY 10003 ( 2nd floor ) Between 13th & 14th Streets, Manhattan.
We are very pleased to announce that our April Program will be held at The Jivamukti Yoga School ( downtown location ) in their JivamukTea Cafe. Our speaker will be Maria Massana, a wellness coach and certified yoga instructor, click here to go to her web site. Maria is a cyclist and a runner and has completed several NYC Marathons and is a Biathlete. She is also the founder of Massana Wellness, an innovative wellness company and does wellness workshops in corporations as well as yoga schools. Her talks are inspirational and insightful and she is available for private consultation.
Maria, will discuss and demonstrate how the various forms of yoga which include breathing, stretching, meditation, & spirituality can certainly compliment cycling in addition to keeping you grounded and focused. Maria also produces raw energy snacks and will discuss these products and recipes and have some samples for you to try. You are also invited to tour Jivamuktis' studios!
The meeting will be held in JivamukTea Cafe and you are encouraged to purchase refreshments and your dinner during the meeting for a very unique and healthy dining experience which is all vegan, mostly all organic from their own sprout garden, with a large selection of creative salads, sandwiches, raw soups, burritos, vegan specials, and coconut water. Price range is $5 to $15.

Nassau County DA Cracks Down on DWI

Driving While Intoxicated, no definition is needed. This is a serious topic for the community at large. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle 2007 Statistical Data; there was a Total 9,480 Alcohol Related Police Reported Accidents, fatalities, personal injury and property damage in our state. For cyclists there were 7 fatalities and 90 non-fatal injuries. For a complete review of the cases of death or injury involving pedestrians, drivers, passengers please consult the web site.
The Five Borough Bicycle Club as a community service is honored to have Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice as our guest speaker at our Monday Evening June 15, 2009 general meeting. She will discuss her pioneering efforts with respect to aggressive prosecution, legislative enactment NYS Penal Laws 120.04-A , Aggravated Vehicular Assault and NYS Penal Law 125.14 Aggravated Vehicular Homicide as well as her proactive educational stance which is being taken into the schools.
Ms. Rice was elected to her current position in November 2005 and is a graduate of Garden City High School, Catholic University and Touro Law School. She previous served in The United Sates Attorneys office in Philadelphia under Janet Reno and in the Brooklyn DA's office and is a native Long Islander. When the District attorney has spare time she enjoys running marathons, cycling, skiing and golfing. She also was featured on a 60 minutes piece this past January being interviewed by Bob Simon and has been involved with two cases in which a cyclist was the victim.
The program is open to club members and non-members especially young people and all purveyors of the road.

There are two very outstanding local teams that are focused on the environment, sustainability, multi modal usage and of course fun for cyclists, pedestrians and the general public. One team is currently working on The Hudson River Greenway & The other team is working on The Bronx section of The Bronx River Greenway (a small yet crucial component of The East Coast Greenway.
Howie Mann
Howie Mann of The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council- NYMTC http://www.nymtc.org/ is a nationally recognized transportation engineer who has developed a specialization in freight planning. He also heads their Pedestrian/Cycling Group. He is a long Island Cyclist. Howies' team is currently working on The Hudson River Link (which will provide for an interrupted path from Inwood Park to the Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers).
Maggie Scott Greenfield
Maggie Scott Greenfield of The Bronx River Alliance (www.bronxriver.org) is an urban planner and environmental scientist with an advanced degree from M.I.T., is the director of the greenway for The Alliance & has completed the following projects: The Bronx River Greenway Plan (www.bronxriver.org/plans) and the Bronx River Greenway Signage Plan. It is anticipated that the greenway will become a linear park from The East River to The Kensico Dam with recreational, educational, ecological and out reach community programs. Maggie and her team are currently focused on the Shoelace Park & Front Knox areas of the Bronx (from Magenta Street to 233rd Street-along the Bronx River) in conjunction with The NYC Parks Department.Maggie is also a cyclist and already has her toddler cycling with her.
As cyclists most of us are very familiar with these two venues. The 5BBC invites you to come here about the master plans of these two teams who share a common mission and to also offer feedback as consumers of the product.

September General Meeting-An Open House at EMS

At our January Meeting Al Hastings of In motion events inmotionevents.net was one of speakers. 5BBC Vice President Sharon Behnke and Programs Coordinator Barry Hartglass ventured on one his tours, as paying customers', during the summer of 2009 and this program is an account of that adventure inmotionevents.net/lighthouse. Terrain covered is from Portland to Yarmouth (by Cat Ferry of course) to Barrington, to Liverpool, to Bridgewater, to Middletown, to Annapolis Royal, to Belliveau Cove and then back to Yarmouth and eventually Portland.

Please note change of venue for this meeting. The Lower Manhattan BID has advised us that they need their conference room for internal use on October 19, 2009. Our meeting, including the scheduled presentation and nominations, will be held at the Woolworth Tower Kitchen (In their back room) located at 233 Broadway opposite City Hall - Cross Street is Barclay Street. The entrance to the restaurant is actually at 9 Barclay Street.
Refreshments compliments of the club will be soft drinks and "finger food". A cash Bar will be available also.

This year join our self contained folding bike compatriots on a fun gastronomical excursion from Carcassonne to Nice!
The wine and cheese reception is from 6:30 PM to 7:15 PM. Executive Board Election Ballots, if not previously mailed in, can be walked in until 7:00 PM. Tod's Presentation will commence at 7:15 PM. Election Results will be announced that evening after certification is made by the elections and nominating committee.

I take the programs that I create very seriously as the 5BBC Program Coordinator. The events and meetings that I create will be educational and at times entertaining.
