It’s finally over and I can take a break! Four years of constant working on the club’s Day Trips program is enough to drive one mad with exhaustion. Was it worth it? Sure!
Here are some highlights:
Getting to know so many people, from our veteran ride leaders who have been around for decades to the hundreds of fresh faces new to cycling or new to New York City.
Learning more about urban riding than I ever thought possible. And I thought I knew the city before I started this task, but working with so many people in the club and participating in so many more rides has taken me to places I never thought I would see.
Learning more about the surrounding suburbs and country from the many training rides, the special events put on by our friends and other clubs in the region.
Working on our master ride calendar, plotting the many rides and working with so many individual leaders to minimize the number of calendar conflicts is one of the hardest parts of the job, I learned.
Planning the club’s series of Montauk Century Training Rides has been a challenge all by itself, not just from the scheduling perspective but in coordinating the many ride leaders.
A few words about our upcoming rides:
Once again we have a few favorites and also a number of new rides, some from our new crop of leaders. I’m especially pleased to see that we have a few more rides in a historical context as well. No surprise but it appears that many of us are interested in this type of ride. One upcoming ride I’d like to highlight is “The Commissioner’s Plan of 1811”, (see on Wed, Nov 14th) a night ride that I have put together to commemorate the Manhattan street grid that was adopted nearly two centuries ago.
Once again, thanks for all of your participation and support!
